Thelma Kaplan, 94, died at home with her family by her side on October 21, 2020. Thelma was born in New York and raised in Brooklyn. Thelma had a great desire to learn and was a good student who was in a Rapid Advance class where she was skipped a grade. She was very proud of being able to obtain free education, due to her grades, which gave her the opportunity to attend Brooklyn College where she obtained a Bachelor Degree as a Dietician. She was accepted at NYU to continue her Education for her Master’s Degree which she turned down, since she was married and wanted to dedicate herself to her family. She worked in various hospitals throughout New York and New Jersey. Thelma was a very active member of Congregation Anshe Chesed, Linden, NJ where she held numerous positions including being a member of the Board of Directors, President of Sisterhood, Financial Secretary of the Executive Board, In 1995 she was awarded Women Of the Year Award for all her hard work and dedication to her Temple. Besides all of the committees she was involved with, she was also very active with various fund raisers for the different groups in the Temple. She was a proofreader for the Temple newspaper, was an active member of the dance class held by her friend Ros, she took pottery classes and yoga classes. Thelma was an avid reader, mystery being her favorite books. She is predeceased by her husband Ruben and her brother Robert. She is survived by her son Richard and her daughter Anneliese Nifoussi,, grandchildren Jenna and Jacob Nifoussi and great grandchildren Joseph and Madison. She also leaves behind her nephew Stuart,his wife Fran and their son Scott. Services for Thelma were held at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge, NJ. Donations in her memory may be made to Congregation Anshe Chesed, Linden, NJ or to Brooklyn College.
