Gloria Sern (née Panitch), 95, of Somerset died on December 25, 2021. Born in Newark, she was raised in Elizabeth and had lived in Clark for 30 years prior to moving to Scotch Plains and then Somerset.

Mrs. Sern received her undergraduate degree from NYU and two master’s degrees from Rutgers University. She was a Home Economics and Special Education Teacher in Newark before having children.

A member of Temple Beth O’r/Beth Torah in Clark for more than 50 years, she served on various committees including the board of education. She was also a member of Hadassah and the National Council of Jewish Women.

Predeceased by her husband Sol in 1993, her brother Jack Panitch and sister Charlotte Shevick, she is survived by daughters, Stacey Sern (Jonathan Greenberg) of Edison, New Jersey and Marcy Sussman (David) of Potomac, Maryland, grandchildren Scott (Brina Seidel) and Jennifer Greenberg, and Joey and Benjy Sussman, brother Rabbi Herbert Panitch of Aventura, Florida, sister Arlene Kaye of West Orange, New Jersey and many nieces and nephews.

Services were held December 27 with arrangements by Goldstein Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Temple Beth O’r/Beth Torah, Clark, New Jersey or the charity of your choice.
